BH’s BEST WEEK EVER!! PLEASE READ!!

( I didn’t take this pic. Taken & borrowed from planetgreen.com)

Okay, brace yourselves my friends.

This past week has been full of major surprises! My parents celebrated 40 years of Holy Matrimony on Saturday! My 4 siblings and I played a major Simon Says game on them, where their entire weekend was based on text messages on their phones with directions on what to do next. And I catered the dinner party for about 60.

I’ll post on that this week. Food and all.

And then my sis turns 30 TODAY!!!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY SISSY!!! YOU ARE THE BEST! more on that later too!

And then, folks… and then… as if the surprise for my parents were enjoying wasn’t enough, I get my own bit of surprise on Friday, too!!

I’ve been waiting for two weeks to tell you something really BIG!

You all know Emeril, right? Do we like Emeril? Do we love Emeril? I do! And even more now because…………………..

I’M GOING TO BE COOKING WITH HIM ON HIS NEW SHOW!!!!

Yes, yes, yes, yes!!! I got a call on Friday while taking a much needed nap, from his production team in NY inviting me to be on his new show called “Emeril Green”, airing on the Discovery Network starting in July! The new show is themed around sustainable and organic cooking and eating!

The fab part is that it’s being shot exclusively at the Whole Foods Market in Va, very close to my parent’s house!!

How did this happen!? I submitted my pic and bio about 6 weeks ago to a call they had for real cooks. I did it knowing they were going to be shooting in Va, and since I come up so often, I thought it’d be great! I then got an email 3 weeks ago asking for an in-person interview which was taped!!!

And then the phone call!!! Wait, I already said that…okay sorry. I’m just so speechless. I’ll get all the details tomorrow (Monday), but what I do know is that I can’t fly back to Atlanta on Tuesday as scheduled b/c we start taping this week! (UPDATE ON 4/24: start shooting the week of 4/29). They’ll be coming to my house up here to interview me, get to know my fam, watch me cook something special and maybe I’ll even sing! (oh, by the way, the oxtail and coconut rice is on hold until further notice for this reason).

The second and third segment tapings will be shopping and cooking with the man, at the Whole Foods!!

Okay, I’m so geeked out about this, I can’t even get my words out right now. So, I’m going to bed, so I can think about how I’m going to give our kitchen a quick make-over tomorrow (mami is now responsible for this)! You know, curtains have to be upgraded, as do floor mats and even some our pots! And of course I have to go buy some really cute shoes! Diane and Lys, what do you think??

More details on Wed!

So sorry for no food or recipes in over a week; and for postponing the oxtail post, again. I’ve been mad busy, as you know, so I’ve no real time to cook AND take pics, edit, etc..

Thanks for reading and I will have food soon…I promise… :)

Off to bed, I’m beat.

  • Lys Says:

I’m still deliriously happy for you. Emeril is no small potatoes, my friend *LOL* and, that apron, stylin’.

I think we need to find out his height before I can recommend any shoe suggestions. Don’t want to give him a TomKat complex ;)

Congrats again!!! Pretty soon, our ChefB will get her own spot on the Discovery network (which, btw - appears to have quite a few fabu shows)

CONGRATS!!!!! Oh B I am SO excited for you!!!!

  • Zenchef Says:

This is great news! I’ll be watching for sure. I see him every once in a while, he has an apartment 2 blocks away from where I work.. he almost rolled over with his shopping cart once at the supermarket. Tell him the Zen-man didn’t forgive him. Hehe.

  • Nicole Says:

Flop a Dog!!!!! That is just my crazy saying (in lieu of cussing around kids)!!! I would be out of my skin if I were you. Congratulations. That is so very amazing. I started watching Emeril waaayyyy before anyone knew who he was. Before I think I even had internet. And frankly most people didn’t. The only way to get the recipes he featured was to writ in or write REALLY fast. Guessing it was around ‘95ish. Sad. Aging myself here.

How long will your gig be? My husband grew up in VA near DC. I wish you mountains of success and more.

  • Bellini Valli Says:

That is just so awesome for you. Congratulations are definitely in order. Sadly we don’t get Emeril here at all unless they change the lineup on the Canadian Food Network:D

  • Johnny Foxx Says:

Great Job… cant wait 2c da show!!!

Who Is B? Bren Herrera

Mi nombre es Brenda. My friends call me B. And Bren is my stage and pen-name. I’m a single gal living alone in Atlanta for the time being. I’m a soulful chick. I have a passion for all things food. I’m a singer/musician really, but an incredible cook, I have to say! I was raised in a very traditional Latin home, which meant everything happened(s) in the kitchen, literally! story-telling, crying, partying, fighting…oh yeah and cooking!

Spanish Word of the Day
  • Bolsa (Bol-sah)

    (noun)
    Bag

La bolsa means bag, and applies to many of the same objects as the English word. "una bolsa de plástico"--Trans: a plastic bag
  • Style Paella and Pael

Paella is Cuban slang meaning "for her". It's also a Spanish dish of rice and a lot of seafood! I just threw Pael in there for the hec of it!

I thought this was a tee shirt when I first saw it. I’d love this bag even more if it was! Great for running errands and maybe even some light grocery shopping!

I’m styling a friend for his album cover. I’m thinking about this bowtie for his nautical and retro look. Please just don’t wear that when we go to dinner!

    Latin Spices & Herbs

    Annatto

Annatto or bixa is a seed from the annatto tree, indigenous to the Caribbean and Central America. It’s a spice we commonly use to color rice, meat dishes and sometimes even butter and does give a peppery taste. You will also find this spice used in the very popular branded Sazón seasoning packets by Goya. I sometimes use it as a substitute for saffron to make yellow rice. I seldom use it for my meats. In Latin countries the word is bijol or even achiote, though that has different properties I’ll address later. You can buy it in whole seeds and get the desired color by infusing in warm water or buy it in lose powder. Try it!
