Another Great Week: TV News, Music, Food, Travel, CB Giveaway, Oh My…ChaChing!
Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I’m hopeful all you of reading this are having a fabulous week so far! It’s Wednesday. Have a cocktail for lunch.

I. SURE. AM.

Lunch mtg. with my editor yesterday (and I got two new books as a gift). Meeting with an entertainment lawyer on Monday. Finished recording a girl anthem song last night. And even gave an English lesson to my Columbian neighbor.

Some of you kid with me about my whimsical lifestyle (Kevin @ Peanut Butter Boy, Mr. Orph’s Kitchen, etc..), you know, no real schedule, just kind of go with the flow between singing, cooking, writing and traveling. Oh yea and the occasional TV appearance. The truth is that it only appears that way; but there is a beautiful method to my madness. I accept all travel assignments, no matter what’s going on & no matter where in the world; I’m selective about who I cater for (a caveat: if the money is right, I’ll subject myself to treachery and rude clients and just do it, wearing bad ass pumps to keep me sane and cute, because internally I’m probably counting down the minutes until I’m exiting the venue and back in my car); and I show no shame in getting the job done.

I was waiting to tell you I’m traveling, again. This time, to St. Maarten for an indulgence and decadence tour! Exactly, what that means, I’m not sure! I was told something along the lines of spa treatments and gourmet dining and wining. Certainly nothing like the T & T trip 3 weeks ago. Yes, I live around food, but good Lord, what we did on that trip in a matter of 4 days was sinful.

I suspect I’ll be lingering around the bluest beaches of the French side of the island. Sipping on mango mojitos and waking up to burnt orange sunrises. Lovely. I did see something on my IT about scuba diving and doing a zip line (which is way fun if anything like what we did in Mexico). I travel Monday, returning on Friday.

ALL TO COME BACK TO THIS TWO DAYS LATER:

My episode with Emeril airs on Monday July 14th at 9pm, EST, on PLANET GREEN!!

Okay I’m not screaming any more. But, I just got word yesterday! The show premiers that same night and I’m the 3rd episode of 6 they’ll be airing! Is this good? The shows title is “Cuba Libra”. Really? You know, they could have consulted with me to come up with something not So predictable! But who cares! I’m cooking with Emeril and I’m really geeked. And this means it’s just about that time for me to share with you the dishes I prepared for my friends and family, on the show. I know I’ve been putting it off, but it was to be able to do so here.

So now I’m scrambling trying to put a viewing party together in all of 5 days. Do you think I should cook the same meal I prepared on the show? Let me know what your thoughts, this week. This is when I need 5-10 ppl working for me so they can make things happen while I’m scantily clad and flirting with int’l boy toys.

If you don’t get PLANET GREEN, or are Int’l, I’ll keep you posted on when I put the epi up on Flanboyant Eats TV and Youtube. Speaking of FE TV, I finally uploaded the vid of me cooking the spicy seared scallops. I was a day or two late, but it’s up! Take a look! It’s over to your right and on youtube here. There were some goofs, but I’m so okay with that because it offers a sense of realism. Plus, if it was perfect the first time, what’s there to work and look forward to watching next time, right! LOL.

What else? This really cool and aesthetically sexy lifestyle magazine (art, fashion, celebs, politics, music) called CLUTCH did a great write up on me and it published yesterday online. It’s a very well-rounded piece about being young and diverse; so those of you that don’t know me personally, you’ll get to learn a tad bit more about moi. Nothing x-rated or anything like that. Just real talk. We didn’t focus on FE alone, which I was glad about. Ladies this is for you to feel encouraged to do your thing and step out of the box! Check it out here.

And one fun thing I’m doing today is interviewing this person’s

(pretty B-I-)

personal chef and partner of her restaurant MADRE’S in Pasedena, Ca, which opened in 2002. He’s Cuban which made total sense for me to want to chat to. I’m really looking forward to talking to him in Español and getting the dish on cooking for the iconic business woman, singer, etc…Hell, maybe I’ll squeeze a self-invite to come out to LA and cook with him for her! How cool would that be?

Are there any questions you’d like me to ask him about her? Like how was dating Puffy or serving him with his extra-ness. Or wait, was she with Ben Affleck at that time?? Hmmm. I need to know no later than NOON TODAY. So sorry for the late notice. I’ll post excerpts of the interview later this month.

And lastly, I’m doing another contest! This was unexpected, completely. The French Bistro cookbook I’m reviewing is so good I want you to enjoy it as well! If you didn’t read the Malta post, check it out and you’ll see how that came about. Long story short, the publicist checked out the blog and offered to give me an extra copy to give away. It’s produced by the CIA, written by John Fischer and Lou Jones. The cookbook is well-written and designed and covers everything from traditional French cuisine, to technique, offers wine pairings, great pictures and history on French culinary uses! I love the book, plus it’s pretty, for those of you that obsess over good-looking cookbooks!

Recipes and Reflections on Classic Cafe Cooking
By John W. Fischer and Lou Jones

What do you have to do? Leave a comment. That’s it. Say hi. Tell me what your fave post/recipe is, give me an idea for my next recipe, tell me how much you want to see me on TV, etc… okay that was EGO talking. Sorry. The winner will be chosen through a random generator. I will announce the winner on July 13th and mail on the 15th! GOOD LUCK!

There’s so much more, but you’ll have to wait til lata this week!

Sorry, no recipe today but I will have one on Friday: home made pasta sauce!

Love the new redesign. Much more user friendly! So, ask the J-Lo chef the following question: is her a$$ worth insuring? KIDDING. Anything you ask her, she’s his boss - i’m sure it will come out as a positive for j-lo (who, I’m not a fan of, to be honest. I also need to tape your emeril show! embarassingly, and hilariously, i’ll be at madison square garden that night pumping my fist in the air as I scream, “WHOOOOOO! We’re halfway there! WHOOOOO! Living on a prayer!” at the Bon Jovi concert. Did I seriously just tell you all that!?

This is so cool!!! I can’t wait to see the emeril show. I’ll send you a normal email later this week.

Who is B?

B Mi nombre es Brenda. My friends call me B. And Bren is my stage and pen-name. I’m a single gal living alone in Atlanta for the time being. I’m a soulful chick. I have a passion for all things food. I sing and song-write on the side, but cooking is what pays my bills! I like to say I’m a pretty darn cook! I was raised in a very traditional Latin home, which meant everything happened(s) in the kitchen, literally! story-telling, crying, partying, fighting...oh yeah and cooking!

Saffron

(pic from saffronusa.com)

We all know this spice. Coined as the most expensive spice in the world, we love to cook with this tiny little thread. It is mainstay in any Latin kitchen. Used for rich yellow/reddish coloring and a smoky flavor, we primarily use it in our yellow rices and some meat dishes. Though saffrons pocket pinching pricetag, a fine, high-grade batch of threads will yield enough color and flavor to last a long time. If you don’t have saffron dollars, a great substitute is either annatto or achiote, both coloring agents with similar properties. My fave dish to use saffron in, “arroz con pollo”! I’ll soon post on how to use it with some recipes. Enjoy!
